Piau-Engaly, Hauts-Pyrenees, Dept 65. 1800-2600m

Piau-Engaly is another ski resort 12 miles further up from Saint-Lary on the D118 towards the Bielsa Tunnel into Spain. It is approx 750 miles from Calais. It is a steep ascent up a fairly steep narrow winding road about 3 km long with many hairpin bends and some parts without barriers. They keep the road clear in the Winter months as it is one of the main routes into Spain.

Good advice would be to arrive before 15.00 or after 18.00 and do not leave after 07.30 until about 11.00 as tour coaches arrive and leave at these times and meeting one of these on this road could prove hairy.

The resort is purpose built high up in the Pyrenees on the Spanish border. There is not much nightlife or shopping, there are restaurants/cafes but they all are small. There is also a small supermarket and trinket shop. Plenty of skiing shops.

They have dedicated car park P5 for Camping-Cars and have provided space for 120 Motorhomes. The site is all tarmac and is reasonable level in most parts. 4 amp electric, you hook up and wait for the guy to come along and switch you on. English is not spoken. €11.30 per night, pitch and electric.

The car park is adjacent to the ski slopes. There are heated toilets at the bottom of the site with water, dump and rubbish facilities (RV's need macerator).

Its a 200 yard walk to the slopes and according to a French couple the slopes are steeper than you normally find in the Alps.

There are 65 kms of runs on 41 pistes with 7 black, 9 red, 29 blue and 5 green runs. Due to its height snow conditions are generally good throughout the season.
