Les Saisies – Espace Diamant

Les Saisies is located in the French Alps, 30km north east of Albertville, on the Col des Saisies, 1650m. between Flumet and Beafort. The village is relatively new, but is an attractive place with traditional wooden alpine chalets and no concrete! The usual facilities can be found; including shops, street market, ski hire, ski school, bars, restaurants and tourist information office, though this is not a resort for those seeking extensive après ski activities. The skiing is excellent for beginners and intermediates with 70 km of mainly well groomed, blue and red runs with fantastic views of Mt Blanc available on the Les Saisies ski pass. Les Saisies is also connected to the Espace Diamant ski area, which includes the resorts of Praz-s-Arly, Flumet, Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe, Crest Voland and Hauteluce giving a total of 185 km of inter-connected downhill skiing. In addition to downhill skiing there are 140 km of prepared trails for Nordic skiing.

Les Saisies is very popular with French motorhomers with two aires available for parking. The principal aire is located at the north end of the village with parking for forty or more vehicles at a cost during the skiing season of 7 euros a night. There is no discount now for long term stays and the AVMP ( municiple police) are really on the ball at between 9 and 10-30 in the morning. A bourne is available for water etc., at a charge of 1.50 euros. A baker visits the site every morning around 8.15 with bread croissants etc.. From the aire the centre of the village is less than ten minuets walk away with the ski slopes virtually accessible from the door of your van. A second aire is also available on the road out of the village to Bisanne though this is not as convenient as the one described above and has no facilities.

In addition to the aires there is also a camping site called Le Grand Tetras Camping Caravanning in Les Saisies

Camping Le Grand Tetras can be found on the way out of Les Saisies on the Route de Bisanne an easy 15 minute walk into town but a hard uphill trudge of around 20 minutes return.

The main building houses the reception area; toilets; washing up area; chemical disposal point and the ski drying room. Both the ladies and men’s toilets have 1 disabled and 3 Turkish style toilets. The drying room can be located in the ladies toilet area. Although slightly dated they are warm and there is plenty of hot water both in the sinks and showers. Showers cost 1 euro for which you get approximately 5 minutes. Tokens are available from reception. You can pre-order bread and croissants daily, gas is available and the owner runs a taxi which can be pre-arranged. 19 Euros (Christmas 2008) will get you from the site to town. The owners are very friendly and it would be very handy to have a good understanding of French. Once a week they offer vin chaud free to all campers.

Within a 5 minute walk you will find a small supermarket (well-stocked), a sports shop where you can hire all your ski gear (you can pre-order via the internet with this shop), a ski pass booth and an ESF school shop. The site offers about 50 plus hard standing pitches with either 6 or 10 amp electric hook up.

Undoubtedly the best feature of this site is the ability to ski-in ski-out. The skiing is excellent and there are plenty of easy wide blue runs, some super reds and a few blacks. The Les Saisies skiing area is more than enough to satisfy a weeks holiday, however if you wish to venture further afield then the Espace Diamant area is also available. The area offers a free ski bus, which runs daily from outside the site to town and back. Beware though the last bus from town back to the site leaves at 7.45 pm.

There are some excellent restaurants on the mountain and there is one within walking distance (5 minutes) from the site - The Meteor but make sure you book a table as they are always busy.

Les Saisies is very French and has lots of shops, restaurants and bars and is a family resort. You won't find a high rise building in sight and if you want to party till dawn and hear lots of other British voices then this is definitely not the place for you.
