Alpe du Grand Serre

Only  forty five minutes drive from Grenoble, Alpe du Grand Serre was one of our best motor home friendly finds of last season, (2007).

Leaving Grenoble take the N91 east towards le Bourg-d’Oisans. Approximately 25km from Grenoble turn right onto the D114, 13km along the D114 brings you to the summit of the pass and the ski resort of Alpe du Grand Serre, (1367m).

Parking for motor homes is on the left before the village centre. A large sunny area with toilet, rubbish disposal, chemical toilet emptying point and water. Also available are approximately 10 electric hook-up points. No charge is made for parking or for the use of the facilities, (including the electric hook-up) though donations towards upkeep of the aire can be made at the tourist information office. The village and ski slopes are less than ten minutes gentle uphill walk from the aire, so it is possible to ski back down at the end of the day. The village, though small, has a good range of facilities; mini-market, bakery, cafes, bars, ski school, equipment shops and a very helpful tourist information office.

The skiing is enjoyable with 15 lifts serving 55km of piste. Also available are 20km of piste for Nordic skiing, (across the road from the aire), and there are ample opportunities for walking, (with or without raquettes).

This was one of the friendliest places we stayed at during our eight weeks in the Alps last year. It is very French but we felt that we were made most welcome despite major shortcomings in our skiing abilities and our lack of mastery of the language. We definitely intend to return for a few days this season.
